Pekoe Trail Multi Day Trek: Stages 1 and 2
The Pekoe Trail Stage 1 and 2
Overview
This two-day adventure is an ideal pekoe trail multi day trek, taking you through the first two stages of The Pekoe Trail, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated long-distance walks. Pekoe trail stage one starts at the historic Ceylon Tea Museum on the Hanthana Estate, carrying you through shaded plantation roads, hilltop villages, and sweeping mountain ridges before a restful night at Dunali Mountains Cabana near the trail. Pekoe trail stage two raises the stakes, pushing from Galaha through the scenic Deltota Estate and deep into Loolkandura, the birthplace of Sri Lanka’s tea industry. Full Description
Day 1: Hanthana to Galaha
Your pekoe trail multi day trek begins with a pickup from your hotel in Kandy, and a short drive brings you to the Ceylon Tea Museum on the historic Hanthana Estate. The museum is housed inside the former Hanthana Tea Factory, and if you have a few minutes to spare before setting off, it is well worth stepping inside. It tells the story of how tea shaped Sri Lanka’s highlands, and the building itself has a great deal of character. Clean restroom facilities and good parking make it a comfortable place to start.
From the museum, the trail climbs gently through the Hanthana Tea Estate, one of the oldest and most expansive plantations in the country. Tall trees line the roads, casting shade over the path, and the views of Kandy begin to open up behind you as you gain height. On a clear morning, the whole city is visible below, framed by the seven peaks of the Hanthana Range.
At around 1.4 kilometers, a small crossroads with a local shop makes for a welcome early stop. Pick up a chilled Thambili (King Coconut) or some fruit before continuing along the concrete path past the W15 Hotel and the Hill Country Sport Shooting Club, arriving at the Sugarcane Quarantine Center around the 3.1-kilometer mark.
Further along, the concrete gives way to gravel and the path is flanked by simple cabanas. At 5.2 kilometers, a short side trail leads to a secluded stupa used for quiet meditation. It is a peaceful spot, and a good reminder to walk gently through places like this.
The trail reaches its highest point at 5.7 kilometers, 1,008 meters above sea level. On a clear day, the Victoria Reservoir glitters in the distance and the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rises sharply on the horizon. Take your time here before the gradual descent toward Galaha begins.
Around the 10-kilometer mark, the path passes through a dense stand of tall trees before winding through quiet villages. Film enthusiasts may enjoy knowing that parts of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were filmed in this area.
The lowest point of the stage comes at 10.8 kilometers, where the trail crosses a bridge over a river and enters a cool pine forest. From here, a steep track or a winding road leads up to Galaha Road. Pekoe trail stage one ends at the Galaha Post Office, just 900 meters further on. We then walk back to Dunali Mountains Cabana for the overnight stay.
Day 2: Galaha to Loolkandura
The morning starts with a drive back to the Galaha Post Office, where pekoe trail stage two picks up. The first stretch heads toward Deltota, following the road past Galaha General Hospital before peeling away from the main road and into the Deltota Estate. Locals may suggest the main road, but the estate path to the left is far more scenic and well worth the effort.
At 1.3 kilometers, a signboard reading “Welcome to the Deltota Estate” marks a right turn. The trail passes a school ground and a few houses before the climb begins in earnest. Looking back from the ascent, the views of the Hanthana Estate and surrounding peaks are a strong reminder of how far you have already come.
At a tea weighing station intersection, take the path to the right. The trail is wide and easy to follow here, though it grows more complicated closer to the village section where a GPS device comes in handy. At 4.6 kilometers, a bridge to the left marks an important turn. When in doubt, local residents know this stretch well and are always willing to help.
Deltota is a lively hill country town, and the market is worth taking your time over. Stalls offer fresh fruit and vegetables, and the surrounding walls are decorated with colorful murals. It is also an ideal spot to refuel before the more demanding second half of the day.
Leaving Deltota, the trail heads 50 meters along the main road before turning sharply uphill to the left. The tarmac quickly gives way to gravel, then forks right into 2.5 kilometers of old pine forest. The trees here are enormous, and the shade is welcome. This section is known for leeches, particularly after rain, so check your legs regularly and come prepared.
At 8.3 kilometers, the trail joins a tea estate road that zigzags steadily upward. The views grow wider with every meter of elevation gained. Near 9.3 kilometers, the path levels out near the summit, where a communications tower sits just above the trail to the right. The ground can be slippery in wet conditions, so watch your footing carefully.
At 9.7 kilometers, an abandoned village and a small river crossing mark the start of a narrow 300-meter section, guided throughout by yellow and red painted concrete posts. By 10.5 kilometers, the path opens back onto a wide estate road leading into the upper divisions of Loolkandura Estate.
The Birthplace of Sri Lanka’s Tea Industry
This is where pekoe trail stage two takes on its greatest significance. Loolkandura is where Sri Lanka’s tea industry was born, and walking these fields feels different because of it. According to Sri Lanka Tourism, the central highlands carry deep cultural and agricultural importance, and Loolkandura sits at the very heart of that story. A track to the right leads to James Taylor’s original cottage, the home of the man who planted the country’s first commercial tea crop in 1867. It is a quiet and genuinely moving place to pause.
From the cottage, the trail descends gradually through lush tea bushes, with massive rock formations on either side and pockets of dense high-elevation rainforest drawing in around you. The walk concludes at a bridge beside a Hindu shrine, with a clean information center and toilet facilities just before the endpoint. Your Lanka Trek vehicle will be waiting here to bring you back to Kandy.
