The Pekoe Trail Multiday Trek: Stage 1 to 3

Overview

This three-day Lanka Trek experience is the perfect pekoe trail multi day trek, taking you through the opening chapters of The Pekoe Trail and covering three of the most historically rich and scenically varied stages in the Kandy region. Pekoe trail stage one is a gentle and rewarding introduction, walking from the historic Ceylon Tea Museum through the Hanthana Tea Estate to Galaha. Pekoe trail stage two steps up the challenge, pushing through the Deltota Estate, a lively hilltop market, an old pine forest, and into the birthplace of Sri Lanka’s tea industry at Loolecondera. Day three is where the trail reaches another level entirely, carrying you through ancient tea paths, a forgotten colonial road, a dramatic mountain pass, and down into the sweeping Kotmale Valley. Three days, three very different moods, and a landscape that shifts constantly from one to the next. This is the Pekoe Trail at its most immersive.

Full Description

Day 1: Hanthana to Galaha

Your pekoe trail multi day trek starts with a pickup from your hotel in Kandy and a short drive to the Ceylon Tea Museum, housed inside the former Hanthana Tea Factory. If you have a little extra time before setting off, the museum is well worth a visit. There is good parking and clean restroom facilities, making it a comfortable starting point.

From the museum, the trail climbs gently through the Hanthana Tea Estate. Tall trees cast shade over the path as you walk, and the views of Kandy begin to open up behind you. On a clear morning, you can see the entire city laid out below, framed by the seven Hanthana peaks.

At 1.4 kilometers, a local shop at a small crossroads makes for a welcome early stop. The route passes the W15 Hotel and the Hill Country Sport Shooting Club before arriving at the Sugarcane Quarantine Center at 3.1 kilometers. As you press on, the concrete gives way to gravel flanked by simple cabanas. At 5.2 kilometers, a side trail leads to a secluded meditation stupa, a peaceful reminder to tread softly.

The trail reaches its highest point at 5.7 kilometers, at 1,008 meters. On a clear day, Victoria Reservoir and the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are both visible from here. The descent winds through quiet villages, and film enthusiasts will enjoy knowing that parts of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were shot in this area. The lowest point comes at 10.8 kilometers, crossing a bridge over a river before entering a cool pine forest. Pekoe trail stage one finishes at the Galaha Post Office, 900 meters further along. From here, we walk to Dunali Mountains Cabana for the night.

Day 2: Galaha to Loolkandura

After breakfast at Dunali Mountains Cabana, we walk back to the Galaha Post Office where pekoe trail stage two begins. The opening kilometer follows the road to Galaha General Hospital before the route turns into the Deltota Estate. At 1.3 kilometers, a signboard marks a right turn onto the estate path, passing a school ground and houses before the gradient kicks upward. The views of the Hanthana Estate and surrounding peaks looking back from the climb are well worth a pause.

At a tea weighing station intersection, take the path to the right. At 4.6 kilometers, a bridge to your left marks an important turn. The trail twists through the landscape into Deltota, a lively hill country town with a market full of fresh fruit, vegetables, and colorful murals. It is a good place to refuel before the more demanding second half.

Leaving Deltota, the trail climbs steeply to the left before the surface changes to gravel. The next 2.5 kilometers pass through an old pine forest with trees that dwarf everything beneath them. Watch out for leeches in this section, particularly after rain. At 8.3 kilometers, the trail joins a tea estate road zigzagging up the mountain. At 9.7 kilometers, an abandoned village and small river crossing precede a 300-meter narrow section marked by yellow and red concrete posts.

By 10.5 kilometers, the path opens onto the Loolecondera Estate, the birthplace of Sri Lanka’s tea industry. A track to the right leads to James Taylor’s original cottage, where Sri Lanka’s first commercial tea crop was planted in 1867. According to Sri Lanka Tourism, Loolecondera holds a unique place in the cultural and agricultural heritage of the island. From here, the trail descends through lush tea bushes and dramatic rock formations before concluding at a bridge beside a Hindu shrine. We then walk to our accommodation near the end of the trail.

Day 3: Loolkandura to Tawalantenne

After breakfast, we walk to the trailhead at a small bridge over the Ma Oya on the Loolkandura Estate. The trail wastes no time, climbing 250 meters within the first hour. At 0.3 kilometers, take the smaller ascending path to the right. By 0.8 kilometers, a shed near a small school marks another right turn, with a colorful Hindu Kovil and the Loolkandura Estate Bungalow visible below.

At 1.1 kilometers, a path drops to a river with beautiful rock pools, a short detour well worth taking before the real climbing begins. The trail then eases into a gentle zigzag at 2.2 kilometers before entering the jungle, where the atmosphere shifts entirely. This is the old Dimbula Road, built over 150 years ago by British engineers, its gradient and stonework still speaking to 19th-century craftsmanship even as the forest slowly reclaims it.

At 4.7 kilometers, the trail crosses the mountain pass onto the Stellenberg Estate. The Kotmale Valley spreads out below, with Adam’s Peak visible on the horizon on a clear day. The next 4.5 kilometers follow flat estate roads with full sun exposure, so keep your hat and sunscreen within reach. At 10.5 kilometers, a descending zigzag road opens up views of the Kotmale Reservoir below, and at 14.1 kilometers, glimpses of the Ramboda Pass and distant waterfalls appear. The trail merges with the main road near the Glenoch Tea Factory at 16 kilometers, with Tawalantenne central just 200 meters to the right. Your Lanka Trek vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Kandy, a two-hour drive through the hills.

5We completed Stage 1 to 3 with Lanka Trek and it was an incredible multi-day trekking experience. Each stage offered something different, from easy scenic walks to more demanding sections. The organization was excellent, and the guide made us feel comfortable at all times. We also loved interacting with local communities along the way. This was the best way to truly experience Sri Lanka’s highlands.
