Full Description

Getting to the Trail

Your Pekoe Trail Stage 1 adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Kandy city. A short drive brings you to the Ceylon Tea Museum, housed inside the former Hanthana Tea Factory on the historic Hanthana Estate. If you have a little extra time before setting off, the museum is well worth a visit. It tells the story of how tea transformed Sri Lanka’s highlands, and the building itself is full of character. There is good parking here and clean restroom facilities, making it a comfortable and practical starting point for this leg of the ceylon tea trail.

Through Hanthana Tea Estate

From the museum, the Pekoe Trail Sri Lanka route climbs gently through the Hanthana Tea Estate, one of the oldest and most expansive plantations in the country. Tall trees line the roads, casting shade over the path as you walk, and the views of Kandy begin to open up behind you. On a clear morning, you can see the entire city laid out below, framed by the distinctive silhouette of the seven Hanthana peaks.

At around 1.4 kilometers, the trail reaches a small crossroads where a local shop offers a welcome early stop. Pick up a chilled Thambili (King Coconut) or a bunch of bananas before continuing along the concrete path. The route passes a handful of landmarks here, including the W15 Hotel and the Hill Country Sport Shooting Club, before arriving at the Sugarcane Quarantine Center around the 3.1-kilometer mark.

As you press on, the concrete underfoot gives way to gravel, and the path is flanked by simple cabanas that add to the trail’s charm. At 5.2 kilometers, a short side trail branches off toward a secluded stupa used for quiet meditation. It is a peaceful spot and a gentle reminder to tread softly in places like this.

The Summit and What You’ll See

Pekoe Trail Stage 1 reaches its highest point at 5.7 kilometers, sitting at 1,008 meters above sea level. The views from here are genuinely remarkable. On a clear day, you can see the glittering stretch of Victoria Reservoir in the distance and the jagged outline of the Knuckles Mountain Range rising beyond it, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape that defines the character of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Take your time here before beginning the gradual descent toward Galaha.

Descent Through Villages and Forest

The walk down is full of variety. Around the 10-kilometer mark, the path passes through a dense stand of towering trees, and the trail winds through quiet villages where local life carries on at its own pace. Film enthusiasts will appreciate knowing that parts of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were shot in this very area, giving the landscape a faint touch of cinematic legend.

The lowest point of the stage comes at 10.8 kilometers, where the trail crosses a bridge over a river at 754 meters elevation before entering a cool pine forest. From here, you can choose between a steep direct track or a more gradual winding road to reach Galaha Road. Pekoe Trail Stage 1 finishes at the Galaha Post Office, just 900 meters further along, where your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Kandy.
