The Pekoe Trail Stage 10

Overview

Pekoe Trail Stage 10 is one of the most remote and rewarding days on the entire route. Starting in Dayagama, a quietly tucked-away village at the far end of the Agarapatana Valley, this stage takes you through deep tea country that very few travellers ever see before climbing into the mist-covered wilderness of Horton Plains National Park. The ascent is steady and demanding, gaining nearly 1,000 meters over 15 kilometers, but the landscape that unfolds around you makes every uphill step worthwhile. This is Sri Lanka’s cloud forest at its most raw and beautiful.

Full Description

Getting to Dayagama

The day begins in Nuwara Eliya, where your Lanka Trek vehicle picks you up for the drive to Dayagama. The journey takes around 1.5 hours, winding through the highlands before arriving at one of the most off-the-beaten-path starting points on the entire Pekoe Trail. Dayagama sits at 1,421 meters above sea level at the far end of the Agarapatana Valley, and the atmosphere here is unlike anything on the earlier stages. This is genuine, unfiltered tea country, and you will likely have the trails almost entirely to yourself.

Through the Agarapatana Valley

Leaving the village behind, Pekoe Trail Stage 10 heads east toward the far end of the valley. For the first 9.5 kilometers, wide and well-marked tea estate roads carry you steadily forward, with the dark line of the high forest growing slowly larger on the horizon ahead. The walking here is straightforward, but the sense of remoteness deepens with every kilometer. Behind you, the valley spreads out in shades of green and gold. Ahead, the forest waits.

Entering Horton Plains National Park

At 9.5 kilometers, Pekoe Trail Stage 10 enters Horton Plains National Park through the Dayagama entrance, part of the UNESCO-listed Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. This is where your pre-arranged entrance ticket comes into use. Access is strictly regulated here, and entry after 2.00 PM is not permitted, so keeping a steady pace through the estate section is important.

Inside the park, the character of the walk changes completely. The wide tea roads give way to dense high-elevation rainforest, and the trail twists and turns through a landscape that feels genuinely primeval. The air is cooler and damper, the canopy closes in overhead, and the sounds of the forest take over. Sambar deer move through the undergrowth, troops of monkeys watch from above, and if you are lucky and quiet, leopard tracks are not unheard of on this trail. The birdlife alone is worth the climb, with a range of endemic species found nowhere else on earth.

The Final Climb to Far Inn

The steady ascent continues through the forest until the 14.5-kilometer mark, where the trail meets the main road running through Horton Plains. A final 500 meters along this road brings you to the endpoint at the old Far Inn, a fitting finish to one of the most atmospheric stages on the entire Sri Lanka pekoe trail.

Your Lanka Trek vehicle will be waiting to bring you back to Nuwara Eliya, a journey of around one hour through the highland roads.

Your Entrance Ticket: What’s Included

The Horton Plains National Park entrance fee, approximately USD 45 per person, is fully covered in your Lanka Trek tour cost. You will not need to pay anything at the gate. Your ticket also gives you access to some of the park’s other iconic experiences, including the Bakers Falls trail, the World’s End trail loop, the summit of Kirigalpotha, the second highest peak in Sri Lanka, and the summit of Thotupola Kanda.

Why Walk This Stage with Lanka Trek?

Pekoe Trail Stage 10 requires careful logistical coordination. The trail endpoint sits 65 kilometers from the starting point via the main road through Nuwara Eliya, and timing the Horton Plains park entry correctly is essential. Our team handles all of this behind the scenes, from transport coordination and entrance tickets to guide support inside the national park, so that you can simply focus on the walk.

This is one of the most physically demanding and visually extraordinary stages on the entire route. The transition from open valley tea estates to the primeval cloud forest of Horton Plains is unlike anything else on the Pekoe Trail, and having an experienced team around you makes all the difference to your day on the mountain.

A Note on Responsible Trekking

Horton Plains National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most ecologically sensitive protected areas. Stay strictly on the marked trail, keep noise low, and never feed or approach wildlife. Carry out everything you bring in and leave no trace. The park’s fragile cloud forest ecosystem depends on every visitor treating it with the care it deserves.
