Full Description
Your adventure begins with a scenic one-hour drive from Nuwara Eliya to Horton Plains National Park. Watch through the window as tea plantations give way to mountain forests and finally open up to the unique grasslands of the plains. If you prefer, we can also meet you at Pattipola or Ohiya railway stations if you’re traveling by train.
Upon arrival at the park entrance, your friendly guide will welcome you with hot tea to warm you up in the cool mountain air. After a brief orientation about the trail and safety tips, you’ll set off on the 9.5 km circular route that leads to World’s End and Baker’s Falls.
The trail starts through open grasslands often shrouded in morning mist, creating a dreamlike landscape all around you. Keep your camera ready as sambar deer frequently graze near the path, sometimes just meters away! The cool, clean mountain air fills your lungs as you walk through this unique ecosystem found nowhere else in Sri Lanka.
Soon the path enters patches of cloud forest, where twisted trees drip with hanging moss and colorful lichens. This enchanted forest is home to purple-faced langur monkeys, many colorful birds, and if you’re very lucky, the elusive fishing cat.
After about an hour of easy walking, you’ll reach the main attraction, World’s End. This sheer cliff drops dramatically for nearly 870 meters, offering breathtaking views across the southern plains of Sri Lanka. On clear mornings, you can see all the way to the coast and the glimmering Indian Ocean in the distance. Take your time here to soak in one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular vistas and capture perfect photos.
Continuing along the trail, you’ll next discover the beautiful Baker’s Falls. Tucked away in a pocket of dense forest, this 20-meter waterfall cascades gracefully over rocky steps into a clear pool below. The cool spray and peaceful setting make this the perfect spot to relax and connect with nature.
Midway through your journey, find a scenic spot to enjoy your packed Sri Lankan lunch. Savor traditional rice and curry while surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes, a meal with a view you’ll never forget!
The return leg of the trail offers new perspectives and often different wildlife sightings as the day progresses. Your guide will point out rare plants, colorful butterflies, and interesting bird species along the way.
As your hike concludes, we’ll drive you back toward Nuwara Eliya, stopping at the beautiful Kande Ela Reservoir to watch the sunset paint the mountains in golden hues—a perfect, peaceful end to an amazing day.
