Full Description

Getting to the Trail

Your day starts in Kandy, where your Lanka Trek vehicle picks you up for the drive to Galaha. The journey takes around an hour, winding up through the hill country as the city gives way to tea estates and mountain roads. It is a scenic start to the day before you have even laced up your boots.

Galaha to Deltota: The First Half of Pekoe Trail Stage 2

Pekoe Trail Stage 2 begins at the Galaha Post Office, where you pick up the trail and start the first stretch toward Deltota. The opening kilometer follows the road leading to Galaha General Hospital before the route peels away from the main road and into the Deltota Estate. Locals may point you toward the main road, but stick to the estate path on the left. It is far more beautiful, and that is exactly the point.

At the 1.3-kilometer mark, a signboard reading “Welcome to the Deltota Estate” marks a right turn onto the estate path. The trail passes a large school ground and a scattering of houses before the gradient kicks upward. Pause on the climb and look back. The views of the Hanthana Estate and the surrounding peaks are well worth a moment of your time.

At an intersection near a tea weighing station, take the path to the right. The trail widens here and is easy to follow, though it grows more intricate as you approach the village section. A GPS device is helpful in this stretch. At 4.6 kilometers, a bridge to your left marks an important turn. If there is any doubt, local residents know this section well and are happy to help point you in the right direction. The trail twists and turns through the landscape as Deltota draws closer.

Deltota itself is a lively and welcoming hill country town. The market is worth a proper look around, with stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, and vibrant murals decorating the walls around the area. It is also a good place to refuel before the second and more demanding half of the day’s walk.

Deltota to Loolkandura: History at Every Step

Leaving Deltota, the trail continues 50 meters along the main road toward Galaha before turning sharply uphill to the left. The surface quickly changes from tarmac to gravel before forking right. For the next 2.5 kilometers, the path moves through an old pine forest, shaded by trees that dwarf everything beneath them. This stretch is known for leeches, particularly after rain, so take sensible precautions and check your legs regularly.

At 8.3 kilometers, the trail joins an old tea estate road that zigzags steadily up the mountain. The higher you climb, the wider the views become. Near the 9.3-kilometer mark, the path levels out close to the summit, and a communications tower sits just above the trail to the right. The ground can be slippery here, so take care with your footing, especially in wet conditions.

At 9.7 kilometers, an abandoned village appears alongside a small river crossing. The trail narrows for about 300 meters, but yellow and red painted concrete posts keep you on track throughout. By 10.5 kilometers, the narrow section opens back out onto a wide estate road leading into the upper divisions of Loolecondera Estate.

The Birthplace of Sri Lanka’s Tea Industry

This is where Pekoe Trail Stage 2 takes on a deeper meaning. Loolecondera is the birthplace of Sri Lanka’s tea industry, and the surrounding fields carry a significance that goes far beyond their beauty. According to Sri Lanka Tourism, the central highlands are recognized for their cultural and natural heritage, and walking through Loolecondera makes that heritage feel very real. A track to the right leads to James Taylor’s original cottage, the home of the man who planted Sri Lanka’s first commercial tea crop in 1867. It is a quiet and genuinely moving stop for anyone with even a passing interest in history.

From the cottage, the trail descends gradually through rows of lush tea bushes. Massive rock formations rise on either side, and pockets of dense high-elevation rainforest close in around you as you near the end of the stage. The walk concludes at a bridge beside a Hindu shrine. Just before reaching this point, an information center with clean toilet facilities sits on your right, a welcome stop after a long and rewarding day on the trail. Once the hike is done, your Lanka Trek vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Kandy, roughly a 1.5 hour drive back through the hills.

5Stage 2 was one of my favorite hikes in Sri Lanka. Walking through the tea estates and visiting historic spots like the first tea plantation was incredible. Lanka Trek handled everything smoothly, and our guide kept a great pace while sharing stories along the way. It was a bit challenging in parts, but the views and experience made it totally worth it.
