Full Description
The day starts with an early pickup from Kandy at 6.30 AM and a drive to Thangappuwa village, right on the edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range. From here the trail leads through tea fields and quiet countryside before entering the UNESCO World Heritage conservation forest.
The first stretch covers about 2 km with a 200 m climb, bringing you to the highest point of the trail. From there the path levels out for around 15 minutes until it meets the stream that feeds Kotaganga Waterfall. A small bridge crosses the water here, and just 50 metres further on lies Kotganga Plains, an open patch of mountain grassland worth pausing at. Past the plains, a narrow foot trail follows the stream downhill toward the falls. The rest of the hike runs downhill from this point, finishing near the Kotaganga estate at the base of the stream.
Inside the forest, the trail passes through misty cloud forest where sightings of hone lizards, sambar deer, and occasionally leopards are possible, though never guaranteed. Along the way, the stream opens out into the six waterfalls that give the trail its name, each framed by rock and dense greenery.
Following the stream down brings you closer to the falls, with cool spray in the air and clear pools worth stopping at. Higher points along the route also give wide views back across the Knuckles Range, with its jagged peaks rolling off into the distance.
By late afternoon, the trail brings you back to Kandy, with the sound of Kotaganga Waterfall and the quiet of the forest still fresh from the day.

Lanka Trek
Adventure awaits - explore more with us!
5We visited these amazing waterfalls last March during our Sri Lanka tour. I believe the Knuckles Mountain Range is one of the most underrated areas in Sri Lanka. We had a very unique experience with Lanka Trek. The trail is not very long, but it offers so much within just a few hours.
Lanka Trek did a great job organizing everything without any problems. They took care of every little detail and always made sure we had the best experience.
Great work by the team.
Wishing you all the best!
5Our trip to Kotaganga waterfall was nothing short of amazing. The waterfall itself was stunning, but what made it truly special was our guide, who explained everything about the area and made the day enjoyable. Very professional and super friendly. I can confidently recommend Lanka Trek to anyone looking for a great hiking trip.
