The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kandy to Kotaganga Estate, taking over an hour through lush landscapes of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Along the way, we can stop for breakfast at a local shop. From Kotaganga Estate, the hike to the spectacular Kotaganga waterfall chain begins. This 8-kilometer trail leads to five majestic waterfalls, each offering unique and breathtaking viewpoints that showcase the natural beauty of the region. The first waterfall of this chain is remarkable because you can experience reverse flow as mist due to strong wind. Sometimes all the water disappears as mist when the wind is particularly strong.
After the waterfalls, we visit Kotaganga Plains grassland, which offers fine views of the mountain range. The trek continues to Thangappuwa village through tea estates and then to our accommodations, where you can enjoy a comfortable stay.
After breakfast at the cabana, the trek starts with a 9-kilometer ascent to the first of the Five Peaks in the Knuckles Range. Along the way, you will enjoy panoramic views, visit Knuckles waterfall, and experience the untouched beauty of this remarkable mountain range. A village-style parceled lunch will be served at a scenic spot along the trail.
After exploring the highest peak, the adventure continues along a 9-kilometer trail back to our cabana accommodations. The cabanas are located near the forest border, offering a comfortable base in the wilderness. As evening arrives, settle into your cabana and relax in this peaceful mountain setting, surrounded by the serene beauty of the Knuckles Range. This overnight stay allows you to connect with nature while enjoying comfortable accommodations in one of Sri Lanka's most pristine environments.
Your third day begins at 8:00 AM with a trek from the cabana to Heeloya village. This 10-kilometer journey takes you through forest trails alongside natural water streams and through estates. After a one to two hour hike, you will reach the remote village that has preserved its traditional way of life.
Upon arrival, you will discover a peaceful community where local families continue their ancestors' practices. One of Heeloya's most fascinating aspects is its preserved traditional justice system. Visit the historic location where village headmen once held court hearings. This unique legal tradition offers insights into how rural communities governed themselves for centuries.
The village showcases diverse agricultural practices that have sustained the community for generations. Observe spice plantations where cardamom, cinnamon, and pepper grow naturally. Watch villagers demonstrate toddy tapping techniques, witness traditional beekeeping methods, and explore home gardens filled with tropical fruits and vegetables.
Midday brings a memorable experience: traditional Sri Lankan lunch prepared by village families. Seated in a local home, enjoy an authentic feast featuring fresh rice, aromatic curries, and unique village specialties made with local ingredients and recipes passed down through generations.
Throughout your visit, enjoy conversations with friendly villagers eager to share their stories and traditions. Special Note
You can leave your heavy luggage in our vehicle, and we will transport it to the cabana. On the last day, our vehicle will collect it from the cabana.
We plan to reach Kandy before 5:00 PM on the third day.
