Why Book This Trek?

This trek offers a complete picture of what the Knuckles Mountain Range has to offer, from remote and untouched wilderness to the villages that give the region its character. Few tourists ever see the hidden waterfalls and cave campsites of the early days, and fewer still get to spend an afternoon learning about village traditions that go back generations. Whether you come for the mountains, the waterfalls, or the culture, this trek brings all three together in one well-paced journey.

Tour Details

Day 1: Kandy to the Cardamom Hut

Your adventure begins at 6:30 AM with hotel pickup from Kandy. You will travel to Bambarella, a remote village where the trek starts. After a morning briefing from your guide, you will hike through Bambarella village and the Lebanon Estate tea plantations before entering the Knuckles Conservation Forest. The trail leads through pygmy and cloud forests, home to plants and animals found only in this region. After several hours of hiking, lunch will be served beside a mountain stream. By evening, you will reach a historic cardamom hut, the last of its kind in the Knuckles Range, where you will spend your first night.
Distance: 14 Km
Elevation Difference: 800 m

Day 2: Hidden Waterfalls and Cave Camping

After breakfast, you will hike through thick forest for about two hours to reach a hidden waterfall area. Along the way, you will explore several of the six secret waterfalls and natural pools found in this untouched part of the forest. The day’s highlight is a cave located next to a 70-meter waterfall, a natural feature found nowhere else in Sri Lanka. You will spend the night camping inside this cave, with the sound of falling water close by.
Distance: 6 Km
Elevation Difference: 400 m(downhill)

Day 3: Ranamure Village and Ginikuru Falls

After breakfast, the trail crosses two open grasslands with wide views of the Knuckles Range. You will visit the top of Ginikuru Falls before descending to Ranamure village, a peaceful community that has lived beside the mountains for generations. You will have time for a bath in the Ranamure Oya stream before lunch, a traditional rice and curry meal served beside the paddy fields. Following lunch, you will be transported to Thangappuwa, a journey of about three and a half hours, where you will settle into your cabana accommodation for the night.
Distance: 12 Km
Elevation Difference: 600 m(downhill)

Day 4: Kotaganga Waterfall Chain

After breakfast at the cabana, you will begin the hike via Thangappuwa Estate. This 8-kilometer trail passes five major waterfalls, each with its own unique character. The first waterfall is known for a remarkable natural phenomenon. Strong winds can blow the falling water upward as mist, making the waterfall appear to disappear completely at times. From there, the trail continues through the Kotaganga Plains grasslands, offering beautiful mountain views and passing another four waterfalls before returning through the tea estates to Thangappuwa. You will spend your second night at the cabana.
Distance: 8 Km
Elevation Difference: 500 m

Day 5: Knuckles Five Peaks

After breakfast, the trek begins with a 9-kilometer climb to the first of the Five Peaks. Along the way, you will take in panoramic views and pass Knuckles waterfall, with lunch served at a scenic point on the trail. After reaching the highest peak, the trail returns 9 kilometers to the cabana, where you will spend your final night in the mountains.

Your last day begins at 8:00 AM with a trek from the cabana to Heeloya village. This 10-kilometer trail follows a natural water stream through forest and estate land, reaching the village after one to two hours of walking. At Heeloya, you will visit the site of the historic village court system and learn about the region’s traditional agriculture, including spice cultivation and beekeeping. A traditional Sri Lankan lunch will be served in a village home, prepared by local families. In the afternoon, you will have the chance to join in daily village activities before your vehicle collects you and your luggage for the drive back to Kandy, where you will be dropped off at your hotel around the Kandy city area.
