Full Description
The day begins early with a pickup from Kandy and a drive to Thangappuwa village, where the trail starts. From here your guide leads you onto the Leopard Trail, named after the elusive wildcats known to roam these mountains.
About three kilometres in, the path crosses the Kotaganga nature bridge, a quiet spot where a forest stream runs beneath the trees. It’s a good place to pause and take in the sound of running water before the climb continues.
The forest thins out as you gain height, giving way to open grassland around the four kilometre mark. This is where the first of the five peaks comes into view, part of a ridge that gives the range its name, said to resemble a clenched fist from certain angles. On a clear day, the views stretch for miles across the surrounding hills.
The trail continues across open meadow between each peak, with your guide pointing out plants and wildlife found only in this part of the island. After the final peak, the descent begins, with a stop at a mountain stream along the way. Cooling your feet in the clear water here is a welcome break after the climb.
Lanka Trek builds in rest stops, snacks, and a packed lunch with local flavours throughout the day.
Why Book This Knuckles Mountain Hike?
This is a full day in one of Sri Lanka’s most striking mountain landscapes, led by guides who know the trail well beyond the marked path. The Knuckles Range holds UNESCO World Heritage status and shelters over a thousand plant species alongside wildlife rarely seen elsewhere on the island.
Lanka Trek keeps groups small to limit impact on the environment while giving each traveller proper attention on the trail. Transport, meals, and an experienced guide are all included, so the only thing left to focus on is the hike itself.
Whether you trek regularly or are taking on your first serious climb, the five peaks of the Knuckles Range offer a rewarding day out in the hills above Kandy. After completing the hike, while heading back to Kandy, if you would like to enjoy a cup of tea, just let our guide know. He will stop at a small local tea shop where you can enjoy freshly brewed tea made with pure mountain water. It is a perfect way to round off the experience before the drive back to Kandy.

5We booked the Five Peaks hike through Lanka Trek, and I was impressed right from the start. Their website is clear and easy to use, and the option to pay by card made things very convenient. The hike itself was amazing, and the guides went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and safe. Lanka Trek truly sets a high standard for hiking in Sri Lanka.
