Day 1: Kotaganga Waterfall Chain

The panoramic Sri Lanka trek begins with a scenic drive from Kandy to Kotaganga Estate, taking just over an hour through the lush and layered landscapes of the Knuckles Mountain Range. There is an opportunity to stop for breakfast at a local shop along the way, a gentle and unhurried start to the days ahead.

From Kotaganga Estate, the trail sets off toward one of the most spectacular waterfall chains in the entire Knuckles region. This 8-kilometre route leads to five majestic waterfalls, each offering its own distinct character and viewpoint. The first waterfall is particularly remarkable. Due to the strength of the wind funnelling through the gorge, the mist from the falls reverses direction and flows upward, and on some days the water appears to vanish entirely into the air before it reaches the ground. It is one of those genuinely unusual natural phenomena that stops you in your tracks.

After the waterfalls, the trail continues to Kotaganga Plains, an open grassland with sweeping views across the surrounding mountain range. From there, the route winds through tea estates and on to Thangappuwa village before arriving at the cabana accommodation for the night.

Day 2: Knuckles Five Peaks

You will visit the site of the village’s ancient court system, a local institution that governed community life for generations, and learn about the traditional agricultural practices that still sustain the village today, including spice cultivation and beekeeping. Day 4: Pekoe Trail Stage 1

After breakfast, a short walk brings you to the Ceylon Tea Museum, housed inside the beautifully restored former Hanthana Tea Factory and the official starting point of the Pekoe Trail Sri Lanka. From here, the trail climbs gently through the Hanthana Tea Estate, one of the oldest and most expansive plantations in the country. Views of Kandy city and the seven Hanthana peaks open up behind you as you gain height.

The route passes a small local shop, a good early stop for a cold drink or fresh fruit, before continuing past the Sugarcane Quarantine Center and a side trail that branches toward a secluded meditation stupa. At the highest point of the day, Victoria Reservoir glitters in the distance and the ridgeline of the Knuckles Range rises beyond it on the horizon.

The trail then descends through quiet villages and a cool pine forest. Film enthusiasts will enjoy knowing that the filming locations used in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom are found in this very section of the trail. The day’s walking concludes at Galaha Post Office, from where you continue on foot to Dunali Mountains Cabana for the night.

Day 5: Pekoe Trail Stage 2

After breakfast at Dunali Mountains Cabana, the trek returns to Galaha Post Office to begin the most historically significant day of this panoramic Sri Lanka trek. The trail passes Galaha General Hospital before peeling away into the Deltota Estate, with wide views back toward the Hanthana peaks. A tea weighing station and a bridge crossing mark the approach to Deltota, a lively hill country town with a market full of fresh produce and colourful murals. This is a good place to rest and refuel before the demanding climb ahead.

Leaving Deltota, the trail climbs through an old pine forest that is atmospheric in any weather and particularly moody after rain when the leeches emerge from the leaf litter. The path joins a tea estate road that zigzags steadily up the mountain, past an abandoned village and through a short narrow section marked with painted concrete posts.

The trail then opens onto Loolecondera Estate, the birthplace of Sri Lanka’s tea industry. A short detour leads to James Taylor’s original cottage, the home of the man who planted the first commercial tea crop in Sri Lanka in 1867. Field No. 7, the actual first tea field ever planted in the country, is still growing nearby. From the cottage, the trail descends through lush tea bushes and dramatic rock formations to a bridge beside a Hindu shrine, where a guesthouse awaits for the night.

Day 6: Pekoe Trail Stage 3

After breakfast, the final day of this panoramic Sri Lanka trek begins at a small bridge over the Ma Oya on the Loolkandura Estate. The trail climbs steeply within the first hour, passing a small school and a colourful Hindu Kovil before reaching a river with beautiful rock pools that are well worth a brief detour.

The path then enters the jungle and steps onto the old Dimbula Road, built more than 150 years ago by British engineers to connect Kandy with the distant tea valleys. The stonework and gradient of this forgotten colonial road are still visible beneath the encroaching forest, and walking it is one of the most atmospheric stretches of the entire panoramic Sri Lanka trek.

At the mountain pass, the Kotmale Valley spreads out dramatically below and Adam’s Peak rises on the horizon on a clear day. The trail continues along the flat, sun-exposed estate roads of Stellenberg before beginning its long descent toward the Kotmale Reservoir. Views of the Ramboda Pass and distant waterfalls accompany you through the final kilometres before the trail concludes near the Glenoch Tea Factory at Tawalantenne.
